Program Files 1963-1987; 1972-1987.

This series comprises records pertaining to mission work in India supported by the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). They were retained by the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism's (DWME) office of the Secretary for Southern Asia and the Middle East and are from 1963-1987 with the bulk dating from 1972-1987. Types of records include handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, printed proceedings from consultations, meeting and convention minutes, information and promotional publications, background reference material, project applications and their accompanying material, printed reports, topical essays, printed articles, newspaper clippings, circular letters, and convention bulletins. Much of the correspondence was either received or written by the Rev. J. Frederick Neudoerffer, Secretary for Southern Asia and the Middle East, 1972-1984. There is also some correspondence to and from Pastor Neudoerffer's successor, the Rev. Warner Luoma. Subject matter is divided into ten sub-series, some of which are further divided into sub-subseries. The subseries include general correspondence, general subject matter, education, medical, projects and grants, the Santal Mission, and these indigenous Indian partner churches with whom the LCA-related: Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church, Church of North India, Church of Southern India, Northwest Gossner Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Northern Evangelical Lutheran Church. Subject matter ranges over a wide spectrum including general administrative matters, disaster relief, development projects, efforts to treat leprosy patients and combat the spread of the disease, matters involving the educational institutions of relating churches, and several folders pertaining to matters regarding LCA involvement with the Santal Mission. The Santal records include some that predate the reorganization that created the DWME, but were kept in this series for continuity purposes. They contain useful information about the Santal Mission and are valuable in that the archives has only a small amount of material pertaining to the Santal Mission. Oversized items such as maps and architectural drawings were removed and placed in an oversized folder marked LCA 28/6/3/2/3 and placed in the mapcase area. A notation was made on series folders from which materials were removed. Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
